Consuelo Martínez-Reyes

Dr. Consuelo Martínez-Reyes, Centro’s postdoctoral research assistant, is working with the Centro Archives to research writers Pedro Pietri, Jack Agüeros, Tato Laviera and Víctor Fragoso. Her focus is to analyze literary, theatrical and TV representations of Puerto Ricans growing up in New York City. “I’m interested in the ways the Puerto Rican and American identities clash and/or incorporate into one another and the negotiation processes undergone in the creation of a new, bicultural persona,” she said.

Martínez-Reyes studied comparative literature at the University of Puerto Rico and completed her doctoral degree in Romance Languages (Spanish) at the University of Pennsylvania. Her thesis, ¿Quiénes son las invisibles: (Des)encuentros con lo lésbico en el Caribe Hispano [Who are the Invisible Ones: Hit-and-Miss Encounters with the ‘Lesbian’ in the Hispanic Caribbean], dealt with the apparent invisibility of lesbianism throughout the history of Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic and, more specifically, during the second half of the twentieth century.

She is also a writer and completed an MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish at New York University under the supervision of Antonio Muñoz Molina. She has taught at University of Pennsylvania while a PhD candidate at Swarthmore College and more recently at Princeton University.
