The Puerto Rican Movement and Its Outcomes (1960s-2010s)

Poster 3

Posters highlight different aspects of Puerto Rican social, political, educational and cultural activism during the 1960s, 1970s and the decades that followed are organized thematically. As the Puerto Rican community began to participate in civil rights struggles, issues of educational and citizenship rights, equal treatment, and electoral participation, incorporation, and representation in the U.S. political system became more visible. Like some other U.S. ethnic groups, identity politics and community mobilization became common strategies in making inroads into the political sphere, and in overcoming existing political barriers and negotiating with the power structures.
