Meet the Author
Lisa Sánchez González – The Stories I Read to the Children: The Life and Writing of Pura Belpré

Lisa Sánchez González has always considered librarians her heroes, so it is not surprising she was drawn to Pura Belpré, (1899-1982), the first Puerto Rican and Latina librarian at the New York Public Library (NYPL), as the subject for a book. She will discuss this new book, The Stories I Read to the Children: The Life and Writing of Pura Belpré, at Centro’s Meet the Author event Wednesday, April 24 at Hunter College.

For her book, Sánchez González, an associate professor of English at the University of Connecticut, collected, edited and annotated more than 40 stories and essays by the legendary Belpré, who also was an author and puppeteer. Sánchez Gonzalez’s introduction to the volume, which she worked on for over a decade, is the most extensive study to date of Belpre’s life and writing.

Sánchez González will be joined by Julio Hernández-Delgado, head of the Hunter College Archives and Special Collections, who has done pioneering research on Belpré, and Virginia Sánchez Korrol, a historian and professor emerita in the Department of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies at Brooklyn College at the Meet the Author event. They will speak about the book, which features stories and essays by Belpré, some of which have been published for the first time, as well as Belpré’s legacy.

The event is from 6-8:30 pm, Faculty Dining Room, West Building, Hunter College 68th Street Campus. It is open to the public.
