While she may be best known as a librarian and storyteller, there is much more to know about Pura Belpré. Dr. Marilisa Jiménez-García, currently doing research at Centro, will discuss Belpré’s use of fables to embed political messages and how she used the symbolism of lighting of candles in her writing of lighting the candle. Dr. Manuel Morán, director of the Society of the Educational Arts, will talk about bringing Belpré’s storytelling to life through theater. And in the persona of Belpré, performance artist Flor Bromley, will present scenes from her stories.
