Pura Belpré Celebration

February 6-8
La Casa Azul Bookstore
143 E. 103rd St. Manhattan

La Casa Azul Bookstore is hosting a three-day Pura Belpré celebration in East Harlem, which will include a workshop, movie screening and family day in honor of the legendary storyteller. Centro is a partner for this event, which is open to the public.

Join us as we celebrate Belpré, the woman and her legacy. She was the first Puerto Rican and Latina librarian to work for the New York Public Library system. As a children's librarian, storyteller and author she enriched the lives of children through her pioneering work of preserving and disseminating Puerto Rican folklore. She was also known for advocating for bilingual literacy as well as for creating diverse programing centered on Latino culture.

Here is a breakdown of the two remaining activities at Las Casa Azul:

Screening of Pura Belpré: Storyteller
6-8 pm, Friday, February 7

The documentary, a Centro production, captures the spirit and essence of the storyteller, pioneer librarian and author of Puerto Rican folktales for children. The screening will be followed by a Q&A. Light refreshments will be provided.

Pura Belpré Family Day!
11 am-1 pm, Saturday, February 8

Celebrate Family Day doing what Belpré was known best for: storytelling. Take part in story time and children's activities such as puppet making and bookmaking.

Today a workshop was held to discuss the current trends in bilingual literacy, which Belpré championed, and how to further our implementation in school programming will be led by bookstore staff and Marilisa Jimenez-Garcia, PhD, a research associate at Centro.

Throughout the three-day celebration, attendees can also enjoy Centro’s traveling exhibit Pura Belpré in Her Own Words, which will be on display at La Casa Azul. The exhibit chronicles her professional life. Events are free. RSVP at
