May Events

During the month of May, Centro will present a variety of events that you can’t miss. We kick off the month with a conference May 1st entitled Claiming the Center Stage: Critical Perspectives on Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in the U.S. We are thrilled to be co-hosting the conference with the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (City College), and look forward to welcoming a diverse audience for a day of fascinating looks at the relationship between the Puerto Rican and Dominican communities in the United States.

On Tuesday, May 12th, we follow up with Puerto Ricans in Cyberspace, a look at the ways Puerto Ricans use social media to connect to an increasingly dispersed stateside Puerto Rican community to create a new “barrio.” We’ll be welcoming some of the most important figures in the creation of digital social communities for Puerto Ricans to discuss social media’s role in the creation and re-definition of Puerto Rican identity and social consciousness.

Our third event of May is an exhibition paying homage to Lorenzo Homar, one of the great Puerto Rican artists of the 20th Century. There could be no better subject for us to launch our new gallery space at the Centro Library & Archives. We look forward to celebrating his legacy and influence with a panel discussion and reception to accompany the opening of the exhibition.

All three of these events are free and open to the public. Please Click in the flyers for more details about each event.
